Public Assistance Requested – Wanted Male: Leslie Reid Contois

The Winnipeg Police Service previously requested the public's assistance in locating Leslie Reid Contois, a 42-year-old male of Winnipeg.

He is described as Indigenous in appearance, 5'11" in height, approximately 170 lbs with a medium build, black hair and brown eyes.

On July 15, 2017, Contois is alleged to have committed a serious sexual assault upon an adult female victim in the City of Winnipeg.

A warrant for the arrest of Contois had been issued for the following offences in relation to the sexual assault investigation:

- Sexual Assault with a Weapon
- Uttering Threats - Cause Death or Bodily Harm
- Overcome Resistance by Attempting to Choke, Suffocate or Strangle Another Person
- Fail to Comply Condition Recognizance by Judge/Justice (x4)
- Breach of Recognizance (x2)

The Winnipeg Police Service is again requesting the public's assistance in locating Contois.
An investigation by members of the Major Crimes Unit has determined that Contois is likely responsible for a serious arson that occurred on July 28, 2017, at an apartment building in the 400 block of Sherbrook Street.

As a result of the fire, six individuals were transported to hospital and later released. Damages to the building are estimated at approximately $1,000,000.

A warrant for the arrest of Contois has been issued for the following offences in relation to the arson investigation:

- Attempt Murder (x2)
- Arson with Disregard for Human Life
- Poss of Incendiary Material
- Forcible Confinement
- Unlawfully Cause Bodily Harm (x6)
- Assault with a Weapon
- Uttering Threats - Cause Death or Bodily Harm
- Fail to Comply Condition Recognizance by Judge/Justice (x10)
- Breach of Recognizance (x4)

The public is advised not to approach Contois under any circumstances. If Contois is observed, or his whereabouts are known, please contact 911.

The arson investigation is continuing by members of the Major Crimes Unit. Anyone with information that may assist investigators is asked to call 204-986-6219 or Crime Stoppers at 204-786-TIPS (8477).

Drug Offence - Arrest: C17-182375

On August 16, 2017 members of the Winnipeg Police Community Support Unit, Tactical Support team and Organized Crime Unit executed a Controlled Drugs and Substances Act (CDSA) search warrant and a general search warrant in the 300 block of Poplar Ave.

The following items were seized from the residence:

  • .357 Magnum revolver, loaded with six live rounds
  • $685 cash
  • 7.3 ounces of Cocaine
  • 2.25 grams of Crack Cocaine
  • 1.8 grams of Cocaine
  • And addition items used for drug trafficking

The firearm seized was previously reported stolen to Calgary Police.

Two males were arrested in the area after leaving the residence and one female was located and arrested in the residence.

Derek James FUNK, 33-years-old of Winnipeg has been charged with;

  • Possession of Cocaine for the Purpose of Trafficking
  • Possess Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000 X2
  • 13 firearms related offences
  • And a number of driving related offences

He has been detained in custody.

A 30-year-old female and a 33-year-old male, both of Winnipeg,  have also been charged with Possession of Cocaine for the Purpose of Trafficking, Possess Property Obtained by Crime Under $5000 X2 and a number of firearms related offences.

The adult male and female have been released on a Promise to Appear.

Missing Person: C17-182123

On August 15, 2017 at approximately 9:10 p.m., Winnipeg Police were called to the Red River, just north of the Redwood Bridge in regards to a youth male who entered the river. A witness advised that the male swam half way across the river before he disappeared.

Officers conducted an extensive search with the assistance of WFPS Water Rescue and River Patrol which was unsuccessful. General patrol officers further searched the opposite river bank to determine if the male possibly made it across and exited the water however no evidence of this was seen.

The Winnipeg Police Dive Unit is continuing it's search of the river.
