Mischief – Endangering Life – Arrest involving Air1 – C16-83335

On April 27, 2016 at approximately 10:00 p.m., members of the Flight Operations Unit – Air1 were struck by a laser while on patrol in the area of Salter Street and Selkirk Avenue.  
 
While searching for the source of the laser, Air1 was struck approximately five times placing the aircraft and crew at serious risk. Each illumination of the green laser filled the cockpit with refracted light. These occurrences caused the flight crew to become temporarily disoriented requiring the pilot to make abrupt manoeuvres.    
 
Further investigation indicated that the light source was coming from a residence located in the 300 block of Selkirk Avenue. Ground patrol units responded and took custody of a 16-year-old male. A laser pointer was located and seized by officers.  
 
A 16-year-old male is facing the following charges:
 
Mischief – Endangering Life
(Canadian Aviation Regulations) Project Light Source into Navigable Airspace
 
He was released on a Promise to Appear.

Fatal Motor Vehicle Collision – C16-82700

On April 27, 2016 at approximately 8:00 a.m., emergency personnel responded to a serious collision involving two vehicles in the area of Wilkes Avenue and Charleswood Road.

The investigation has revealed that a Ford Focus was being operated westbound on Wilkes Avenue and a Nissan Rogue was travelling southbound on Charleswood Road. The Rogue proceeded to make an eastbound turn when the collision occurred.

A 56-year-old male operating the Focus was transported to hospital in critical condition. He was later pronounced deceased.

The Central Traffic Unit were notified and continued to investigate.

No charges have been laid at this time.

Anyone with further information regarding the collision and have not spoken to investigators are encouraged to contact members of the Central Traffic Unit at 204-986-6271. 

Homicide Investigation – C16-82893

On April 27, 2016, at approximately 2:20 p.m., emergency personnel responded to the area of Alexander Avenue and Dee Street regarding an injured male.

Further information suggested that the male was suffering from injuries consistent with being stabbed and required immediate medical attention.

The male was transported to hospital in critical condition and later pronounced deceased. He has been identified as: Gheorghe, UTA, 52-years-old of Winnipeg.

Members of the Homicide Unit continue to investigate. Two persons of interest have been described as follows:

1)    Male, Aboriginal in appearance, in his twenties, 5’9” – 6’0” in height, thin build, wearing a dark hoody with hood up, baseball cap worn underneath. He was riding a blue mountain bike.

2)    Female – Aboriginal in appearance, in her twenties, 5’4”-5’5” in height, medium build, long dark hair, wearing a light coloured zip up hoody and black pants. She was riding a white mountain bike.
