Stolen Auto Arrest
During the early evening hours of December 21, 2009, a newer model Chevrolet Suburban was stolen from a shopping centre parking lot in the 1300 block of McPhillips Street.
At 8:10 p.m., a residence in the first 100 block of Ambleside Boulevard was broken into. No property was obtained by the suspects.
At 8:20 p.m., a residence in the first 100 block of Newbury Crescent was broken into. No property was obtained by the suspects.
At 8:30 p.m., a residence in the first 100 block of Great Elm Cove was broken into and a newer model Ford Fusion was stolen from the garage. The suspects fled in the vehicle.
As a result of the investigation by members of the Stolen Auto Unit, two Level 4 Offenders under the Winnipeg Auto Theft Suppression Strategy were identified as suspects in the incidents.
With the assistance of Manitoba Probation Services electronic monitoring staff, the suspects’ whereabouts were tracked to the South Tuxedo area of the city. At 8:50 p.m., assisting Uniform members located the vehicle in the area of Holland Boulevard and Grant Avenue and attempted to stop it.
The suspects fled in the vehicle and a brief pursuit ensued which was aborted by police due to public safety concerns as the suspects were travelling at speeds in excess of 100 kph.
At 9:25 p.m., members of the Stolen Auto Unit observed the stolen vehicle in the area of Headmaster Row and Dalgleish Bay and became involved in a pursuit as the suspects continued to refuse to stop.
As the suspects continued to flee, they became involved in a collision with a vehicle on Henderson Highway causing moderate damage to both vehicles. No one was injured in the collision.
The driver of the stolen vehicle lost control of it at Henderson Highway and Chalmers Avenue and was successfully contained by members of the Stolen Auto Unit resulting in the arrest of the suspects.
Several police units were involved in the incidents, including Uniform members, the Canine Unit and the Stolen Auto Unit. A number of police vehicles sustained minor damage however no one was injured.
The investigation also revealed that the suspects had removed their Electronic Monitoring Devices in an attempt to evade police.
The 19 year old male suspect was charged with the following offences in connection with the incident:
- Break and Enter X 3
- Possession of Break-In Instruments
- Mischief under $5,000.00 X 2
- Theft Over $5,000.00
- Unauthorized Possession of a Weapon
The 17 year old male suspect was charged with the following:
- Break and Enter X 3
- Theft Over $5,000.00
- Drive while Disqualified
- Mischief Under $5,000.00 X 2
- Unauthorized Possession of a Weapon
- Possession of Break-In Instruments
- Flight from Police Officer
- Numerous Court Order breaches
- Fail to Remain at the Scene of an Accident under the Highway Traffic Act
Both suspects remain in custody and the Stolen Auto Unit is continuing with the investigation.
Counterfeiting Arrest
On December 16, 2009 members of the Winnipeg Police Service Commercial Crime Unit executed two search warrants at a hotel in the 200 block of Garry Street.
The search resulted in the seizure of the following:
- Canadian and U.S. counterfeit money in $20.00 denominations
- Counterfeit money manufacturing paraphernalia
- A dagger
- A quantity of Marihuana
Sheldon Walter SCHELTHELM, 44 years of Winnipeg, was charged with a variety of charges including Possessing Counterfeit Money and Possess Counterfeit Instruments in connection with the investigation.
Vladimir Jason NEILL, 39 years of Winnipeg was charged with Making Counterfeit Money, Possess Counterfeit Instruments and Fail to Comply with the Conditions of an Undertaking X 4 in connection with the investigation.
Both suspects were detained at the Winnipeg Remand Centre.
Investigators are requesting that anyone who may have been the victim of a financial transaction involving counterfeit $20 bills in either Canadian or American denominations contact the Commercial Crime Unit at 986-6231.
The investigation is continuing.
