Winnipeg Police Service Media Release
For Immediate Release
Shelley M. Hart Appointed Deputy Chief of Police
Winnipeg, MB – Chief of Police Keith McCaskill today announced the appointment of Inspector Shelley M. Hart as Deputy Chief of Police for the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS).
“A strong, experienced candidate, Shelley Hart was the best choice for the job,” said Chief McCaskill. “She’s a proven leader who will help us strengthen our communications, build strong relationships with staff and the community, and help us move the WPS forward.”
Hart, a thirty-year veteran of the WPS, presently leads the Major Crimes Division, which is responsible for the investigation of all major crimes in Winnipeg, including homicide, robbery, drug-related offences, and organized crime. In this capacity, she has worked to improve call out procedures and the coordination of investigations, build on the partnership with Winnipeg Crime Stoppers, and enhance cooperation between WPS units.
Hart, who joined the WPS as a Cadet in February, 1978, holds certifications in human resource management, management development, and public sector management from the University of Manitoba, and in Executive Development in Policing from the Canadian Police College. As an investigator, she has held a wide range of assignments, including uniform general patrol, vice, property crimes, robbery/homicide, and traffic.
As a Senior Officer, Hart has provided leadership in the Duty Office, Traffic Division, Communications Division (911), and Uniform Division #13. From December 2006 to January 2008, she served as the project leader for the City’s 311 initiative – developing the business case for providing a single point of access to information about all non-emergency City services and programs.
“The chance to serve the WPS as a Deputy Chief is, for me, a truly incredible opportunity,” said Hart. “I am looking forward to working closely with the whole team, to build on the initiatives Chief McCaskill has undertaken.”
Hart assumes the role of Deputy Chief effective Monday, November 3, 2008.
