Arson Awareness and Fire Safety Campaign Launched

The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) – together with the Winnipeg Police Service (WPS) and the Office of the Fire Commissioner (OFC) – today launched an arson awareness and fire safety campaign targeting all citizens, particularly parents and youth.

“The campaign encourages parents to teach their children about fire safety, including the dangers of fire, and further encourages adults and youth to make fire safe decisions,” said Brandy Maslowski, Public Education Officer, on behalf of Fire & Paramedic Chief Jim Brennan.

“All kids can be curious about fire,” continued Maslowski. “We want parents to talk to their children about matches and lighters, and to develop and practice a home escape plan year after year.”

The campaign includes three advertisements to run on the back and inside of Winnipeg Transit buses, three public service announcements for radio, as well as public education presentations in schools and in the community. The awareness campaign will run for the next eight weeks, with school presentations continuing in the Fall.

Fire and burn injuries are among the most frequent causes of death of children under five years of age. The awareness campaign launched today is aimed at educating the public about the risks associated with fires that often devastate the homes and lives of families.

In the last two years the Arson Strike Force – comprised of the WFPS, WPS and OFC – has made over 300 arson-related apprehensions. Over 50% of those were children under the age of 12.
