Public Advisory – Debit and Credit Cards
The Winnipeg Police Service would like to remind the public to be vigilant when using debit cards. A number of reports have been received regarding debit cards being stolen and used by the suspects for financial gain.
The suspects look over unsuspecting victims' shoulders when conducting transactions with their debit cards and memorize their personal identification numbers. The victims are then followed out to the parking lots and approached by two or more individuals who distract them either by asking for directions or pointing something out on their vehicle, thereby causing the victim to look away. When the victim is districted the suspects steal their bank or credit cards, wallet or purse. The debit cards are later used to withdraw cash from the victims' bank accounts.
Citizens are reminded to always cover the pin pad on automated banking machines or point of sale terminals and to be aware of unsavoury persons who may be hovering in the area.
Debit and credit cards should be kept securely in wallets and purses should be closed at all times. Pin numbers should be memorized whenever possible and should not be written on the card or kept with the cards. Thefts should be reported immediately to bank and credit card companies and a report should be made to the police.
Anyone observing suspicious activity of this nature should contact police immediately at 204-986-6222.
