Six New Photo Enforcement Locations Activated Today

The Winnipeg Police Service would like to advise motorists that six new Intersection Safety Camera sites will be activated today.

The Winnipeg Police Service wishes to thank the many motorists for responding positively to our program by slowing down, and stopping at red lights.

Nonetheless, we still have some challenges ahead of us as our research indicates. Recent data collected on an unenforced street indicated that 35% of monitored traffic was speeding. Unfortunately of the 6,731 vehicles monitored, 20 drivers were driving in excess of 100kph in a 60kph zone. However, the Winnipeg Police Service is pleased to have tools such as photo enforcement to curb this type of aggressive driving. Our goal is to help change driving behaviours and make streets safer for everyone.

The locations being activated today are as follows:

  • Grant Avenue and Charleswood Parkway
  • Bishop Grandin Blvd and River Road
  • Main Street and Logan Avenue
  • Main Street and Inkster Blvd
  • Henderson Highway and Gilmore Avenue
  • Portage Avenue and Dominion Street

This will bring the total number of sites in Winnipeg with Intersection Safety Cameras to 42 signalized intersections. The remaining six new intersections for this year are in the process of final construction and will be announced shortly. These six locations are expected to be ready for activation at the end of August, and 30 cameras will be rotating through the 48 sites. In the summer of 2006, a further 12 locations will be selected and placed into service.

With public input being part of the selection process for the Intersection Safety Cameras the Winnipeg Police Service is asking the public to contact the Photo Enforcement Program to suggest locations for 2006. Best access to the program is through the website at www.safestreets.ca

Further information can be obtained from the Photo Enforcement Unit at 204-986-5445.
