Major Crimes Homicide Investigation Arrest

On June 6th, shortly after 1:00 a.m. two males, who had just met, were in a park in the vicinity of Talbot Avenue and Stadacona Street. An argument ensued that resulted in one of the males receiving stab wounds to his upper body. The victim was able to stagger from the park to the 200 block of Talbot Avenue where he collapsed. The 17 year old male from Winnipeg was transported to hospital in critical condition where he later succumbed to his injuries.

The Winnipeg Police Service Major Crimes Unit investigated this incident and has charged Matthew James Mannella, 21 years of age of no fixed address, with Murder and Unlawfully at Large. He has been detained at the Provincial Remand Centre.

 

Police Seek Assistance to Locate Missing Person

The Winnipeg Police Service is requesting the public’s assistance in locating a missing female identified as Marie BERENS who was last seen on June 6th, 2005 at 11:45 p.m. in the downtown area of the City of Winnipeg.

Marie BERENS is 23 years of age and is described as aboriginal in appearance, 5’8” (173 cm), approximately 146 lbs (66 kg) with long brown hair which was worn in a bun, and brown eyes. She was last seen wearing white jeans, a white t-shirt, white runners and a black, white and yellow Nike jacket. She was also carrying a black purse.

Anyone with information regarding her whereabouts is encouraged to contact the Winnipeg Police Service Missing Persons Unit at 986-6250 or the non-emergency police line at 986-6222.

Suspicious Device Located During Police Search

Shortly before 9:00 p.m. this evening, uniform members of the Winnipeg Police Service in the company of the Emergency Response Unit attended to an address in the 500 block of William Avenue to execute a firearms search warrant.

While executing the search warrant, police located a suspicious device and immediately evacuated the occupants of the house. Several neighbouring homes were also evacuated while police waited for members of the Bomb Unit to arrive.

Police subsequently secured and seized an explosive device and firearms. Several occupants of the house in question are being interviewed by police and all of the evacuated area residents have returned to their homes.
