Winnipeg Police Service

Mounted Patrol Unit

Mission Statement

  • Enhance community confidence and approachability through public interaction with the utilization of horses.
  • Provide police response and resources on horseback.
  • Encourage and support public activities and events throughout the City of Winnipeg.
  • Provide unit members with training and education to help foster and preserve the traditions pertaining to the horse and the equine industry.

Our Horses

Titus and Amaro are half-brothers and are black Percheron / Thoroughbred cross geldings.  They were born in Saskatchewan, Canada in 2002.  As yearlings they were shipped to Kentucky, USA where they were purchased by the Winnipeg Police Service in 2007.  The horses began patrolling on the streets of Winnipeg in 2008.  The two horses have grown up together and have a very close bond.

The members of the unit do all of the training with the horses and use natural horsemanship methods.

Watch this video to get a sense of what it is like to serve as a member of the Mounted Patrol:

In March of 2011 the horses had their steel shoes removed and now work barefoot full time.  This decision was made to improve the health and longevity of the horses.  Their hooves are trimmed every 3-4 weeks with a barefoot trim based on the Welz method.  This method provides improved traction on all surfaces.  The full time members of the Mounted Patrol are responsible for the horses’ hoof care.

Following are related articles concerning the decision to have our horses work barefoot:
