Punjab Day Mela makes donation to WPS Endowment Fund

A donation of $5,000 was made to the WPS Endowment Fund

Last summer, Winnipeg’s Punjab community provided the community with a wonderful gift that was the Punjab Day Mela at the Forks.

Event organizers made that gift even greater when they stopped by the new police headquarters to present a cheque in the amount of $5,000 earmarked  for the WPS Endowment Fund from the funds raised at this unique cultural event.

The Punjabi celebration featured dozens of performances by local and international entertainers.

It was the first year for the event in Winnipeg, an annual celebration that previously was held in schools or community centres and catered mainly to South Asian immigrants and their families.

Winnipeg Police Chief Clunis also took part in the day’s events, which inspired the donation to the WPS Endowment Fund.

Mela organizer Ricky Brar explains:

It’s estimated Winnipeg’s Punjabi/Hindi community consists of about 40,000 people.

The WPS Endowment Fund was created in 2014 under Chief Clunis’s leadership. Established through the Winnipeg Foundation, it will provide a means to subsidize recognized community projects that support the Service’s vision of creating a culture of safety.

Established through the Winnipeg Foundation, which will be responsible for the administration and management of the fund, with the oversight of a committee comprised of WPS members, this fund will enable programs that assist at-risk and underserved children, youths and their families, to apply for funds.

Anyone interested in supporting this initiative can visit The Winnipeg Foundation website at to make a donation toward the fund. Donations will be invested as capital with the annual earnings used to subsidize initiatives within Winnipeg
