Community Partners come together for Back to School Dressed for Success Program

Back to school is an exciting time for students and family members.

For many kids, in addition to it being a time for a fresh start in terms of the school year – it often means a fresh start in terms of school clothes as well.

New school clothes, however, are not always the reality for many students. This prompted an officer in our School Education Section to see if he could find some willing partners in the community to help some great youngsters dress for success this school year.

“We saw it at CopShop last year,” says Sgt. Sean Pollock. “Here we were rewarding some great kids with a holiday season shopping spree at St. Vital Centre. Rather than buying themselves nice gifts, these kids (Grade 6) were shopping for necessities like socks and t-shirts.”

“I admire them for their practicality, but they were shopping for fundamentals we often take for granted. It speaks to a real need that is out there.”

Sgt. Pollock relayed the story to a contact at Qualico who wanted to help. The company came up with $5,000 to help purchase these items. He then connected with Urban Tactical which agreed to help stretch those dollars by turning this into a corporate purchase meaning more items could be bought – and more kids would benefit.

More than 1,800 shirts and 1,000 pairs of socks were purchased and are being distributed across six school divisions in Winnipeg.

The members of the Winnipeg Police Service extend their heartfelt gratitude to the folks at Qualico and Urban Tactical for seeing the need and stepping forward to help address it.

Working together we can build stronger communities!
