CopShopCopShop 2014

On Wednesday December 10th the Winnipeg Police Service in partnership with St. Vital Centre and school divisions throughout the City hosted the 8th Annual Winnipeg COPSHOP event.

Thanks to the generosity of St. Vital Centre, 60 deserving children were each paired with a police officer and sent on a $200.00 Christmas shopping spree. They also received a breakfast snack, pizza lunch, and a gift bag packed with assorted items donated by various merchants of the mall.

Students who participated in this event were selected by administrators from their respective school divisions based on need, specific academic or sporting achievements and volunteerism. The students were between 7 to 12 years of age. The efforts of our partnering school divisions are greatly appreciated.

This initiative provides the Winnipeg Police Service a wonderful opportunity for police officers to connect positively with youths to foster life-long relations with law enforcement and their community. This year's event was once again filled with great moments and stories. Those included students buying presents for others before themselves, police officers paying for extras out of their own pockets, and other heart-warming moments of kindness between the students, officers, and staff. More than one student commented "this is the best day of my life".

St. Vital Centre The costs of the shopping spree associated were covered by the St. Vital Centre and totalled over $12,000.00. Special thanks also go out to the following merchants who generously contributed to the event: Walmart, Hudson's Bay, Booster Juice, Red River Co-op, Dental Images, Chapters, Jets Gear, London Drugs, Quilt's Etc, Vanellis and New York Fries.

The Winnipeg Police Service is proud to partner with St. Vital Centre and their tremendous staff for CopShop. We appreciate their efforts and commitment to the community. Due to their generosity, our members are given a special opportunity to have an impact by building caring relationships with young students. It is through positive relationships that we will build a vibrant and safer Winnipeg.
