K9 Unit Vest & Retirement Funds Bolstered by Generous Donation

WPS K9 Unit Receives Large Donation

Our K9 Unit Dog Vest & Retirement Funds received a real boost this week, following a $10,000 donation from the management and staff at Hugh Munro Construction.

The funds were raised through a Halloween fundraiser at the Hotel Fort Garry as well as private donations and donations from the company.

Since the early 1990's, all the Police Service Dogs have been issued ballistic Patrol Vests through the generosity of donations by private citizens and business with assistance from K9 Storm Inc.

In 2011 the retirement policy for the Service's canines was changed. Prior to this, each handler at the time of the canine partner's retirement purchased his/her canine partner for a minimal fee. The handler was then responsible for all food, kennelling and vet bills for his/her canine partner. As with humans the medical bills for these canines are typically more expensive as the canine ages. At times, this could be thousands of dollars per year.

In 2011 the Canine Unit created a Retirement/Vest Fund. The money raised in this fund is used solely to improve the performance and safety for the active canines as well a high quality of life for the canines in their retirement years.
