Jets Suit Up With Tactical Support Team

April 15, 2014 - Nine members of the Winnipeg Jets suited up with our Tactical Support Team for a day of training. Instead of shooting at nets and protecting their goal, they tried their hand at shooting at targets and protecting the community in a controlled training environment.

It’s all part of the Take a Jet to Work contest put on by the Jets as an opportunity to showcase some unique jobs in our community. The videos are played at Jets games and hosted on the Winnipeg Jets website.

April 14, 2014 - Members of the Winnipeg Police Service District #3 Community Support Unit hosted the 18th Annual North End Spring Feast at the Indian & Metis Friendship Centre on April11, 2014.

In traditional Aboriginal communities, there were a select group of individuals known as the Peacekeepers or Warriors of the tribe. They were from the Bear Clan and assumed the responsibility to protect the community from harm. Another important role was to provide food to ensure no one within the community was hungry

The game is in support of City of Winnipeg Paramedic Alex Petric, who was tragically paralyzed in Panama in 2012 and Spinal Muscular Atrophy.

The four finalists of Winnipeg's Top Cop are Patrol Sergeant Nick Paulet, Staff Sergeant Bud Guest, Patrol Sergeant Nicole Sabourin-Friesen and Patrol Sergeant Kirk Van Alstyne. The Top Cop winner will be announced during the event at The Fairmont Winnipeg Hotel on November 8.

WPS K9 Teams Join Peers from Canada and United States for Some Timely Training

October 11, 2013 - On September 13, 2013 the Little Falls Police Department invited 33 canine handlers and trainers who are all members of the United States Police Canine Association (USPCA) to attend a Canine Scenario Based Training event.

Handlers from all parts of Minnesota, Iowa, Wisconsin and Canada took part in the training, coordinated through USPCA Region 12. Two WPS teams, as well as a team from Morden, took part in the training. The training event was an advanced course for canine handlers. Participants learned best practices for responding to some of the very real scenarios these members encounter on the street.

October 10, 2013 - Pretty hard to accuse CJOB reporter Keith McCullough of “lazy reporting” after hearing and watching his feature story on “what it takes” to become a police officer in Winnipeg.

The reporter stopped by the Winnipeg Police Training Academy October 9 and was put through the paces of the Winnipeg Police Physical Abilities Test (WPS-PAT) test by our own Fitness Instructor Hilton Wood. Anyone applying to become an officer must complete the test in four minutes and 15 seconds before advancing in the hiring process.

September 24, 2013 - According to a recent survey conducted by the Manitoba Securities Commission (MSC), one in five Manitobans have been approached by what they thought was investment fraud, thirty percent of Manitobans don’t recognize investment fraud and twenty five percent believe that reporting investment fraud is more trouble than it is worth. To address the survey findings and public concerns with reporting, the MSC has developed Recognize Investment Fraud.com.

A 32-year member of the Winnipeg Police Service, Acting Deputy Chief Thorne has had a well-rounded career in the Operations Branch, evenly divided between Uniform Patrol and Criminal Investigations.  He was promoted to Senior Officer in 2004 and appointed as Superintendent, Uniform Operations in 2009.
