The Community Services Department has designated a Community Resource Coordinator for the Aboriginal Community. The Community Resource Coordinator, working with the Aboriginal Community is a member of the Department’s Core Management team and provides leadership in the alignment of Departmental services in such a way that recognizes and responds to the unique needs of the Aboriginal community. This position also provides community development support to Winnipeg’s Aboriginal Community.
The Community Services Department provides four Public Services:
- Community Resource, Protection and Safety Services
- Environmental Health (restaurant & housing inspections)
- Business Licensing
- Social Support & Development
- Emergency Social Services Response (ESS)
- Community Resource Coordination
- Library Services
- Recreation & Community Development
- Assiniboine Park Enterprise (Assiniboine Park & Zoo)
The Community Services Department operates under a community-based service delivery model known as the Community Resource Area model (CRA). The model is actualized through the work of six geographically deployed Community Resource Coordinators, with a seventh being dedicated to the Point Douglas community and the Aboriginal community. Their efforts fall within two broad categories:
- Furthering the goals and priorities of the City of Winnipeg through efforts that build community capacity and neighbourhood self-reliance, and that support the creation of both service and financial partnerships with the community and other agencies; and
- Being the “agents” of integration for neighbourhood service delivery through efforts that help to align service delivery and priorities of the Community Services Department with neighbourhood need and by fostering collaboration by City departments and other agencies in their day to day neighbourhood service delivery activities.
