Message from the Mayor
I’m thrilled that Winnipeg will be hosting the Canada Summer Games next year! I can’t wait to welcome over 4,000 athletes and coaches, and more than 20,000 visitors from across Canada to what will be an unforgettable experience here in Winnipeg.
National Geographic recently recognized Winnipeg as one of the top tourist destinations in the world! And our city has quickly become a go-to location for large international and local events.
Last November, 28,000 visitors and football fans from coast to coast to coast descended on Winnipeg to enjoy a highly successful Grey Cup festival estimated to have had an 85 million dollar impact on our city’s economy!
In June, we welcomed over 1,500 people for the Federation of Canadian Municipalities Annual Conference and Trade Show; Canada’s largest gathering of municipalities.
We’ve also hosted the FIFA Women’s World Cup, the Pan Am Games, the National Bank Challenger, and countless big name concerts and festivals.
We are known for our top quality restaurants, thriving arts and cultural scene, our sports teams, including the NHL’s Winnipeg Jets, and, above all, our friendly hospitality.
Winnipeg is growing every year and we’re well on our way to one million people strong. Ask anyone who lives in or visits our city and they’ll tell you that we’ve got all the amenities of a bustling, big city, with the warmth and charm of a small town.
Our vivacious communities and historic architecture have made us the backdrop for many movies and TV shows, and our Osborne Village was voted one of the best neighbourhoods in Canada.
Geographically you couldn’t ask for a better spot – we’re situated right at the heart of the continent.
On behalf of the City of Winnipeg and my Council colleagues, I’m looking forward to welcoming everyone to Winnipeg for the 2017 Canada Summer Games next year. We can’t wait to show you everything our city has to offer.
Let the games begin!
