Our City, Your Career! Careers Clerical Testing

If you are being considered for a clerical position and have been scheduled for a keyboarding (typing) and word processing test as the next step in the process, the following information may be helpful:

1. Where do I go for the keyboarding (typing) and word processing test appointment?

  • Go to City Hall - Administration Building - Human Resources - Main Floor - 510 Main Street.

2. How long does the test take?

  • You should allow 45 minutes for this appointment.

  • 16 minutes for the keyboarding (typing) test - (2) - 3 minute keyboarding (typing) warm ups and (2) - 5 minute keyboarding (typing) tests.

  • 30 minutes to complete the word processing (Microsoft Word) test.

3. What score do I need to pass the keyboarding (typing) and word processing test?

  • The Net typing (after error deductions), will be stated on the job posting (most of our clerical positions require 40wpm net typing).

  • 65% basic knowledge in Microsoft Word (you need to score 23 out of 35 questions).

4. I did not pass my keyboarding (typing) test.

  • If you failed to achieve the required Net in typing then you will not be tested in Microsoft Word and your application will not go to the next level of the hiring process. If you applied to a job opening for a Clerical Inventory, your application will remain on file for any clerical jobs not requiring a keyboarding speed.

5. I did not pass the Microsoft Word test.

  • If you did not acquire 65% on your word processing test then you will not have a pre-screening interview and your application will not go to the next level of the hiring process. If you applied to a job opening for a Clerical Inventory, your application will remain on file for any clerical jobs not having a word processing requirement.

6. I passed both my tests.

  • If you did achieve the required Net in keyboarding (typing) and acquired the 65% on your word processing test then you will have a pre-screening interview.

7. I applied to two positions and they both require keyboarding (typing) and word processing tests.

  • You are allowed to take the tests twice.

  • If you passed (both tests) on your first appointment that score will be applied to the other position you applied to and you don’t need to be tested again.

  • If you failed the keyboarding (typing) test on your first appointment your application will not go to the next level of the hiring process for the first position you applied to. However, you will be allowed to come back and be tested again for the second position you applied to.

8. I took a keyboarding (typing) and word processing test last year and passed. Since I applied to another posting this year will those test results still be on file?

  • Your pass level will be kept on file for reference to applications made within a 3 month period only. Call 204-986-3902 to schedule an appointment.

9. I’m visually impaired and have difficulty seeing small letters.

  • Our computer monitors are wide screens.

  • Our keyboarding (typing) documents are available in extra large letters.

Note: If you require an accommodation or have questions about our testing station please call 204-986-3902.
