Open-Air Fire Burning Complaint

Comment:
Most open burning complaints dealing with fire pits are often dealt with and resolved within 2 days. There are however open burning activities other than fire pits which often take longer to resolve. The compliance time is also often dependant on the Branch’s success in locating a building owner or responsible party.

Hoarding/Pack Rat Complaint

Comment: Hoarding is a very difficult issue to deal with. If it occurs in a rental property, the Branch has ability to target the property owner/landlord who in turn can utilize provisions under the Residential Tenancies Act to evict a tenant. If however, we are dealing with an owner occupied home we must balance the fire safety risk with the personal rights of an individual (under the Country’s Charter). The process often involves obtaining assistance from relatives, social agencies, and other City departments such as Health. In other words, every effort is made to work with a person who is hoarding to resolve the situation. This takes months. If a situation ends up going to Court, it could take an additional year or more.
