Fire Prevention Week – Protect Your Family From Fire

Fire Prevention Week for 2011 is October 9 – 15. “Protect Your Family from Fire” is the theme and listed below are the events that we will be hosting:

Friday, October 7 – 10:30 a.m.
  • The kick-off will be held at William Whyte School located at 200 Powers Street. The launch will be in association with the Office of the Fire Commissioner (OFC), Mayor’s Office, Government of Manitoba dignitaries, CAO’s Office and partners. Two civilians will be recognized by the department and the OFC for their quick and proper response to a fire situation. A pumper and crew will be in attendance.
Tuesday, October 11
  • Fire Station # 5 and Public Education will visit Principal Sparling School to build partnerships in the community. During this event, the school children will participate in various activities and education to increase their fire safety knowledge.
Wednesday, October 12
  • Community Safety Net and Public Education will present to all grade 3 students at Niji Mahkwa School as part of the “Live Safe” Corporate initiative.
Thursday, October 13
  • CTV’s new morning program will host a Public Education Officer who will speak about Fire Prevention Week activities and fire safety. This broadcast will be aired from Station # 1 at 7:00 a.m.
Friday, October 14 – 1:00 p.m.
  • All City of Winnipeg schools have been invited to participate in a nationwide fire drill, as part of the Great Canadian Fire Drill. On-shift crews will be asked to attend one of their local schools to observe and participate.
Saturday, October 15 – 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m.
  • The wrap up will be an Open House at all stations from Noon to 4:00 p.m.
  • As in previous years, McDonald’s Restaurants will sponsor the Honourary Fire Chief for a day and will supply cookies, orange drinks, and a Customer Service Representative. Station # 9 and # 10 will not have a Customer Service Representative, but the supplies will be delivered to both Stations. Please have a table set up and ready for the McDonald’s Representative arriving at 11:00 a.m.
  • McDonald’s has produced an activity booklet for distribution and donating all coin box money for the month of October to the Fire Fighters Burn Camp.
  • All material for the Open House will be delivered to Stations the week of October 1st.
Tuesday – Friday, October 11 – 14
  • As in past years, the Department will work with one of our valued partners and set up booths at various Canadian Tire locations. Some crews will be assigned to assist Public Education staff and will be scheduled through the Duty Calendar. All material will be supplied and delivered by Public Education staff to the locations. Health Canada will be teaming up with the Department and Canadian Tire to promote “Matches and Lighter Safety”. (Health Canada will provide all the materials.)
Additional Activities
  • A Fire Safety Activity Page will be available online all week and is designed for kindergarten to grade three students. By getting online and participating, a lucky student could win a free Panago Pizza Lunch for his/her class.   • “Protect Yourself from Fire” material will be distributed to all elementary schools for K-3 classes in Winnipeg and will be dropped off at divisional distribution centres for dispersal and our goal is to reach 52,000 children. Ballots for one of four Nintendo DS systems are in the package. The completed ballots are to be dropped off at our Open House on October 15, 2011.

Emergency Medical Services Week
  • A national event held annually in the third week of May, EMS Week adopts a theme related to public awareness of safety related issues, or raises awareness of emergency medical providers’ roles and responsibilities.
  • Public service announcements on various EMS-related topics are also incorporated into EMS Week.
EMS Week

3rd Annual EMS Night at the Shaw Ballpark

  • Recognition of the excellent service EMS personnel delivers each and every day. An array of emergency vehicles along with Public Education displays will be on site and some special on-field activities will be scheduled.
3rd Annual EMS Bike Ride at Assiniboine Park  www.emsbikeride.ca
  • EMS personnel and the public are invited to participate in the 3rd Annual EMS Bike Ride in support of the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba. Event hosted by Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service and the Paramedic Association of Manitoba.
3rd Annual Celebration of Life Awards Ceremony
  • The Celebration of Life Awards Ceremony provides an opportunity to showcase a sample of the great work done by WFPS employees every day. Department members will be recognized for their extraordinary service and civilians will receive recognition for their contribution in helping make Winnipeg a safer place.
Public Access Defibrillator (PAD)
  • The WFPS and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba will showcase the University of Manitoba Bannatyne Campus as they implemented PAD at their facility. The Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba will also introduce a new Guide to assist organization implement a PAD program.
EMS Children’s Day
  • WFPS in partnership with the Assiniboine Park Zoo will host a Children’s Day for school age children and highlight health and safety messaging with guided tours and activities. A healthy lifestyle is important not matter what species you are.
SAED & CPR Awareness
  • The WFPS and the Heart and Stroke Foundation of Manitoba will provide CPR and SAED awareness to grade 11 and 12 students of participating Winnipeg schools.
Seniors EMS Awareness Campaign launch
  • WFPS will launch a falls, injury prevention and EMS awareness campaigned for Winnipeg seniors. The MSP Paramedic program will also be showcased.


Teddy Bear's Picnic
  • WFPS employees attend this event with an ambulance, the gator and fire trucks on display.
  • Crews provide care for sick bears and provide stickers and tattoos for the children.
  • When possible, the Major Incident Response Vehicle (MIRV) is set up as a minor first aid post and displayed for public viewing.

Children's Festival
  • WFPS staff set up a booth at the Children’s Festival, with ambulances and fire trucks available for viewing by the general public.
  • Safety information and memorabilia including stickers, colouring books and tattoos are distributed to children, parents and teachers.

Fire Prevention Week

Fire Prevention week is from October 9 – 15, 2011

The Winnipeg Fire Department is planning a variety of fun-filled events throughout Fire Prevention Week. Please come out to your local Fire Station Open House on Saturday, October 15, from noon to 4:00 p.m. with your family to meet the local firefighters and even Sparky the Fire Dog.

Health and Safety Fairs

Public Education Officers can be requested to set up an information booth or speak on fire and life safety issues at various community events. Please ensure that you inform us of your event at least 3 weeks in advance as our participation depends on staff availability.
