Costume Museum

Come celebrate fashion, culture, and history at the Costume Museum of Canada. Step into the life of a Manitoba socialite or RCMP officer or an Eskimo from Yukon. With over 35,000 artifacts, the museum brings to life costumes spanning three centuries. After imagining the galas the dresses attended and the soc hops the shoes jived in, head to the library where you can find references such as Vogue, Harpers Bazaar and L'officiel serving as valuable resources for research and inspiration for design work.

Dalnavert Museum
 |
Located in one of the oldest sections of Winnipeg, Dalnavert is the former home of Sir Hugh John McDonald. Built in 1895 it reflects an era of luxury with stained glass, luxurious wood paneling, electric lighting, indoor plumbing and Victorian antiques.

Grant's Old Mill  |
Established by Cuthbert Grant who was the leader of the Metis at the
Battle of Seven Oaks, Grant’s Old Mill occupies the site of the Red
River Settlements first mill built in 1829. The mill is open to the public
and provides a glimpse of a real working water powered mill.

Historical Museum of St. James-Assiniboia
 |
A two storey Red River frame house, built in 1856, is furnished with
period pieces from 1860-1890. This house was owned by William
Brown and Charlotte Omand. There is also a Municipal Hall Building
from 1911 that contains exhibits from the St. James - Assiniboia area
and surrounding parishes. A third building houses displays regarding
blacksmithing, farming, and transportation.

The Living Prairie Museum

|
The Living Prairie Museum is a 13 hectare tall grass prairie preserve and
interpretive centre in Winnipeg. Set aside in 1968, the preserve features
more than 150 different grass and wildflower species and an array of prairie
wildlife in there natural habitat. The tall grass prairie is truly an endangered
ecosystem, with less than 1% remaining in North America. The interpretive
centre opens annually with the blooming of Manitoba’s provincial flower,
the prairie crocus. The summer is highlighted by the museums’ Monarch
Butterfly Festival in July. In early September, the ‘Spirit of the Prairie’
celebration caps off the season. Throughout the summer, museum staff are
available for guided hikes and environmental educational programs for
youth. Everyone is welcome to got for a hike on the museum self guided
trail year-round from dawn until dusk.

Manitoba Children’s Museum

The Manitoba Children’s Museum is home to six permanent galleries that offer plenty of hands-on fun! Children can ride a train, climb a tree, build a bridge, explore the Internet, be a TV anchor, speak their minds and visit the land of fairytales. All that plus public programs, workshops and special events. Open daily at The Forks.

Prairie Dog Central

|
A museum on wheels chugging down the tracks! An 1882 steam locomotive and five turn-of-the-century wooden coaches comprise this grand old train. You may have seen the Prairie Dog Central in movies. Fully restored and operated by the Vintage Locomotive Society, the train offers a 2 ½ hour round trip to Warren, MB and back on weekends during the summer. Ride back in time, smell the wood smoke, hear the steam hiss and steel wheels clatter.

Ross House
|
Ross House is the home of the first Post Office in Western Canada
other than those run by the Hudson’s Bay Company. It provides a
glimpse into the operation of an early postal service, as well as into the
lives of William and Jemima Ross and their family and 1850s
homestead life in general.

Housed in the oldest building in the City of Winnipeg, the former Grey Nun’sconvent, the St. Boniface Museum offers a large significant collection of artifacts that preserve and present the heritage of early French-Canadians and Metis. Seven Oaks House Museum
  |
Seven Oaks House is one of the oldest surviving residences in
Manitoba and one of a handful of log buildings remaining, which give
a picture of life at Red River during the nineteenth century. Built in
1851-53 primarily of wood, the home of John Inkster is today a
valuable part of the province’s heritage. The house takes its name from
a nearby creek where seven large oak trees once stood, marking the
site of the Battle of Seven Oaks fought in 1816 between Red River
colonists and representatives of the North West Company.

Winnipeg Fire Service Museum

In a restored 1904 firehouse at 56 Maple Street the Winnipeg Fire Service Museum illustrates the history of the Winnipeg Fire Department since its formation in 1882. On display are photographs and artifacts as well as vintage firefighting apparatus.

Winnipeg Police Museum

|
The Winnipeg Police Museum displays many artifacts related to the
history of the Winnipeg Police Force, dating from its beginning in
1874. The largest artifact on display in the museum is a 1925 REO
Police Patrol Wagon which is more commonly known as a "Paddy
Wagon" and was used to convey prisoners by the Winnipeg Police
Department from 1925 to 1930. Conducted tours can also be arranged
during the day and on some occasions in the early evening. There is no
entry fee and the building is wheelchair accessible.

Winnipeg Railway Museum
|
Dedicated to the history and development of the railway in western Canada, the Winnipeg Railway Museum collection features the “Countess of Dufferin”, the first locomotive on the Canadian prairies, plus a variety of vintage railcars, cabooses, a Jordan spreader from 1911, technical displays and a gift shop. The Museum is located in historic Union Station at Main and Broadway.
