What You Should Know - First Aid

This information is designed as a guide to assist you in preparing for an emergency, or during a time of emergency. It is not intended as a substitute for detailed first aid or medical training. It is recommended that the Red Cross or St. John Ambulance be contacted for additional training or information.

When people become injured it is important to be prepared to help them by getting help as quickly as possible and providing first aid until professional help arrives.

THINGS TO DO BEFORE SOMEONE BECOMES INJURED

  • Contact the local Red Cross or St. John Ambulance for first aid information.
  • Learn first aid and cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR) from St. John Ambulance or the Red Cross.
  • Obtain a first aid kit for your home, business, vehicles, and boat.
  • Make sure that everyone knows where the first aid kit is located.
  • Be aware: there are diseases that may be transmitted from one person to another by blood contact. Protect yourself by wearing latex gloves (from first aid kit).

THINGS TO DO WHEN SOMEONE IS INJURED

  • Follow your first aid training.
  • Be sure there is no further danger to you or the victim.
  • Phone 911 for medical advice and follow the directions provided by the 911 operator (if/as required).
