- How does the trap work?
Cat Traps:
Pursuant to City of Winnipeg Pound By-law 2443/79 Section 28.(5) live cat traps are available from Animal Services Agency.
The 2011 cat trap rental season begins immediately and runs until approximately October, weather permitting.
- Cat Trap Rental (5 days)
$11.55. (GST included) plus a $51.00 refundable deposit is required - You must live in the City of Winnipeg to qualify to rent a trap.
- Cat traps are available from the Animal Services Agency facility at 1057 Logan Avenue.
- You will be given detailed instructions on how to operate the trap and will be required to sign an agreement agreeing to the following conditions:
- To place the cat trap on the renters property only and to secure the trap from theft;
- To set the trap in a shaded and/or sheltered area out of the public view and to remove the trap in severe weather conditions;
- To check the trap at least once in every eight (8) hour period;
- To release any other animal inadvertently caught in the trap in a safe and humane fashion;
- To take the trapped cat to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way, as soon as possible and in any event within twelve (12) hours of the animal being trapped.
- To take the cat to a veterinarian clinic immediately if the cat appears ill or injured;
- To notify Animal Services Agency 311 as soon as possible if the cat was taken to a veterinarian clinic.
- To return the trap to Animal Services Agency, 1057 Logan Avenue, by the close of business on the date stated in the agreement. An additional charge of $10.00 per day will be charged for traps not returned by the date stated.
- An Animal Services Agency Officer may enter your property at any time during the trap agreement to ensure the agreement is complied with.
- The Animal Services Agency rents Cat traps and are available from approximately April through October.
- Renters should ensure they read and understand how to avoid trapping a skunk in a cat trap
Skunk Traps:
The 2011 skunk trap rental season begins immediately and runs until approximately October, weather permitting.
- Skunk Trap Rental $66.67 (GST included) non-refundable.
- Skunk traps are available from Animal Services Agency at 1057 Logan Avenue
- Skunk trapping season runs approximately April to October each year
- An additional charge of $10.00 per day will be assessed for traps not returned by the date specified on the rental agreement
- Rental fee includes the pickup and disposal of all skunks trapped during the rental period.
- The renter agrees to return the skunk trap in the same condition it was rented, i.e. clean and in working condition.
Why can’t I trap cats and skunks during the winter?
It is inhumane to trap a cat or skunk in extreme cold.
Why should I have to pay to trap someone else’s cat? Why can’t an Animal Services Agency Officer come and catch the cats?
Animal Services Agency does not provide the service of catching stray cats.
What do I do with the cat once I trap it? Can I get rid of it any way I want?
All cats trapped by agreement with the City of Winnipeg must be taken to the Winnipeg Humane Society, 45 Hurst Way.
Can you come and set up a trap for me?
If you are unable to pick-up and set the cat trap yourself you can pay an additional 38.32 for this service.
What do you do with the skunks after they are trapped?
Skunks are humanely euthanized.
Can I use my own trap and have you come and get rid of the skunk for me?
No – Animal Services Agency deals with skunks trapped only in City of Winnipeg traps. If you have trapped a skunk in your own trap it is suggested that you contact an exterminator.
There’s a skunk out during the day. What should I do about it?
Skunks generally are not active during day light hours. You should report any skunk acting abnormally to the Animal Services Agency at 311.
A skunk attacked my dog. What should I do?
If you have concerns about the health of your family pet, you should contact your veterinarian as soon as possible.
What do I do about problem skunks or cats outside of trapping season?
You can contact an exterminator who may offer this service.
I don’t want to rent a trap from the City of Winnipeg. What else can I do?
You could contact an exterminator who may offer this service.
Do you rent any other kinds of traps, like squirrel traps, rabbit traps, raccoon traps, dog traps?
No – Animal Services Agency rents only skunk and cat traps.
I live outside of Winnipeg. Can I rent a trap from you?
No – Animal Services Agency traps are available only to citizens of Winnipeg and must be used within the City of Winnipeg.
How does the trap work?
You will be given verbal instructions and a hands on demonstration when you pick up the trap.
Basic instructions:
- You will bait the trap with something that smells good. For cats we suggest tuna, salmon, sardines, etc. For skunks, we suggest raw bacon or sardines.
- Place the bait at the end of the trap and set the trap as instructed.
- All cats trapped are taken to the Winnipeg Humane Society
- All trapped skunks are picked up by Animal Services Agency
- When using a cat trap, place the trap off the ground by about 18 inches to avoid trapping a skunk. Cat traps are not designed to trap a skunk. If a skunk is trapped, call Animal Services Agency at 311. The $52.00 deposit will not be refunded.
