Does Animal Services Agency have an adoption program?
Yes
Many dogs brought into the Animal Service Agency are strays that are never claimed by their owners and it is great to offer these dogs a second chance.
If you are interested in adopting a dog feel free to browse our adoption page on-line or drop into the Animal Service Agency at 1057 Logan Ave. and see what dogs are available. We will help choose an appropriate pet and encourage you to read our information on “Choosing the Right Dog for You" and to spend time with a dog you may be interested in.
Once you have chosen a dog that suits you and your family, there is a screening process in which you will be asked to fill out a questionnaire and contract. When all the paperwork is finshed and you have been approved we will arrange a surgery date to get your new dog spayed/neutered. All intact dogs that are adopted from the Animal Services Agency must be spayed or neutered.
How much does it cost to adopt a dog from Animal Services Agency?
Adoption fees start at $130.20. For further information on adoption fees contact the Animal Services Agency at 311
Adoption fees include:
- mandatory spaying/neutering
- first license
- check up by the veterinarian
- first vaccinations (excluding rabies)
- tattoo
- microchip implant
- 6 weeks of free PetPlan Insurance

- de-worming for young pups

What do you do with the stray dogs that come into Animal Services Agency?
Every attempt is made to reunite stray dogs with their owners. When a dog is not claimed, and it is deemed adoptable by the Animal Services Agency staff, it will enter the dog adoption program.
Do I have to spay/neutered the dog I adopt?
Yes – It is the policy of the City of Winnipeg Animal Services Agency that all dogs adopted be spay or neutered.
What is spay or neutering?
To spay a dog means it has a surgical procedure which removes the ovaries and uterus. This ensures that the female will not breed and pregnancy cannot occur. Neutering means that the testicles are removed, ensuring that the male will not breed and cannot cause pregnancy.
What kinds of dogs do you have up for adoption?
Come down to the Animal Services Agency facility at 1057 Logan Avenue to visit the dogs we currently have up for adoption, or view photographs in Adoption Dogs.
After I’ve adopted my dog, can the original owner try and claim it?
No - Once adopted, the original owner has no claim to the dog. You are the legal owner.
Do you adopt cats at Animal Services Agency?
No – Animal Services Agency does not have a cat adoption program. If you are interested in adopting a cat, please take the time to visit the many other shelters throughout Winnipeg.

Does Animal Services Agency have a foster program for adoption dogs?
Yes - There are times, for a variety of reasons, that a dog will require care outside of the adoption program and would benefit from a Foster Home. If you are interested in joining the foster program you will be required to complete a Foster Parent Application and attend an interview at Animal Services Agency. Prior to becoming a foster family, you will also be required to sign a Foster Parent Agreement.
Does Animal Services Agency have a “trial period” when adopting a dog?
Yes – If there are young children or other pets in the home, we recommend a one week trial period. After one week, you will need to contact the Adoption Coordinator and advice of your intent to finalize the adoption or return the dog to Animal Services Agency. If you return the dog within this time period, you will be refunded your adoption fee less $40.00.
What happens if the dog needs veterinary care during the “trial period”?
When you take the dog out of Animal Services Agency on a “home trial”, the staff will explain the procedures that need to be followed should the dog require veterinary care during the trial period. You will be given a list of instructions and telephone numbers to call if necessary.
Can I return a dog after the adoption has been finalized?
No - After an adoption has been finalized, you become the legal owner of the dog and are responsible for its care.
What are your hours for adoption?
Our hours for adoption are Monday to Friday from 11:00 a.m. – 5:30 p.m. and Saturday & Sunday from 12:00 noon – 4:00 p.m. Animal Services Agency is closed on Statutory Holidays.
