What should I do if I have found a dog?
Call Animal Services Agency at 311 to report you have found a dog. An Animal Services Agency Officer will be dispatched to pick up the dog. Please note: The City of Winnipeg Animal Service Agency accepts only stray dogs that are found within the City of Winnipeg. If you have found a dog outside of the City of Winnipeg you should contact either the municipality where the dog was found or the Winnipeg Humane Society.
Can I keep the dog at my home and if someone calls you could give them my phone number?
Dogs have a much better chance of being reunited with their owners if Animal Services Agency is involved. Dog owners are advised when they file a lost report to come into the Animal Services Agency facility at 1057 Logan Avenue often to check for their lost dog.
I found a dog with a tattoo. Can Animal Services Agency trace a tattoo?
Yes, Animal Services Agency can trace a tattoo.
How do I know if it has a microchip?
Animal Services Agency is able to scan a dog for a microchip.
I found a cat. What should I do?
Contact the Winnipeg Humane Society at 982-2025.
Do you take any other kind of found animal at Animal Services Agency, other than dogs?
Animal Services Agency will impound a variety of animals including exotic animals and livestock.
I have found a dog and it’s in my car. Can I drop it off at Animal Services Agency?
Yes. You can drop a dog off at Animal Services Agency, 1057 Logan Avenue, during regular business hours.
What do you do if no one claims the dog?
Animal Services Agency makes every attempt to reunite dogs with their owners. When a dog is brought into the Animal Services Agency facility at 1057 Logan Avenue, they are checked for any type of identification such as dog license, tattoo, microchip.
Dogs with no identification are held for five (5) full days. Dogs with identification are held for ten (10) full days. After that time, the dog becomes the property of the City of Winnipeg. Dogs are assessed for their adoptability. If their temperament and health are good, they are placed in the Animal Services Agency Adoption Program.
Also, unclaimed dogs from Animal Services Agency may be placed in adoption programs at various animal shelters throughout Winnipeg. There are times, however, that unclaimed dogs must be humanely euthanized, for health and temperament reasons.
Do you sell unclaimed dogs for research?
No. Animal Services Agency does not sent unclaimed dogs for research.
Will you euthanize the dog if no one claims it?
There are times when unclaimed dogs must be humanely euthanized, for health and temperament reasons.
Can I call and see if the dog I brought into Animal Services Agency has been claimed?
Yes. Make note of the reference number given to you by the Customer Service Representative when you called 311 and we can advise of the disposition of the dog.
Can I adopt the dog if no one claims it?
Advise Animal Services Agency when you call that you are interested in adopting the dog if it is not claimed. If the dog enters the Adoption Program, you will be contacted.
Can I take the dog to the vet instead of your office?
You should contact Animal Services Agency at 311 for the dog to be picked up by an Animal Services Agency Officer. Veterinary clinics are under no obligation to accept stray dogs.
Will you pick up a found dog at night?
No. Animal Services Agency does not provide for stray pick-up outside of regular business hours.
I can’t drive all the way to your building. Where else can I take the dog the dog?
An Animal Services Agency Officer will come to your location to pick-up the stray dog.
What am I suppose to do with a dog I find after hours?
Animal Services Agency does not provide for stray pick-up outside of regular business hours. Call Animal Services Agency at 311 and report the found dog. Animal Services Agency will respond the next business day.
I found a dog wearing license tags. Can you tell me where it lives?
No. That information is confidential and cannot be released. Call Animal Services Agency at 311 and an Animal Services Agency Officer will make contact with the dog owner.
Where should I take a dog that I found outside of the City of Winnipeg?
The City of Winnipeg Animal Service Agency accepts only stray dogs that are found within the City of Winnipeg. If you have found a dog outside of the City of Winnipeg you should contact either the municipality where the dog was found or the Winnipeg Humane Society.

What to do if you have lost your dog:

Visit Animal Services Agency at 1057 Logan Avenue to check for your lost dog. We recommend checking frequently.

Contact the local veterinarians in your area especially the emergency clinics that are open 24 hours.

Call Deceased Animal Pick-up at 311 in case your dog has been hit on the road.

Put an ad in the local newspaper under Lost and Found and make up poster with your dog’s photo on them and post them in the neighborhood and by any local schools.

Don’t give up. Sometimes dogs are found months later.
If you have a description of my dog, why do I have to come to your building to check?
Dog descriptions may vary so it is important that you check in person at Animal Services Agency for your dog.
If you find my dog, will it cost anything to get him back?
If your dog is wearing it’s valid license, and it has not been brought into Animal Services Agency in the past licensing period, your dog will be released to you free of charge, if picked up by end of business the following day.
If your dog has been impounded during the last licensing period or does not have a valid license, impounding fees will apply. You will also be required to purchase a dog license prior to your dog being released from Animal Services Agency.
Can I put up a Lost Poster in your building?
Yes. Animal Services Agency has a bulletin board in their front lobby and you are welcome to post your lost pet poster on it.
Where should I take a dog that I found outside of the City of Winnipeg?

Lost Cats
Do you have cats at the Animal Services Agency building on Logan Avenue?
No. Animal Services Agency has no kenneling facilities for cats. Contact the Winnipeg Humane Society and other rescue shelters in the City of Winnipeg to check for your lost cat.
Can I put up a Lost Poster in your building?
Yes. Animal Services Agency has a bulletin board in their front lobby and you are welcome to post your lost pet poster on it.
Will it cost anything to get my cat out of the Winnipeg Humane Society?
Yes. The City of Winnipeg Pound By-law 2443/79 Section 28. (9) specifies the impound fees that will be charged. Call the Winnipeg Humane Society of specific details on your impounded cat.
What if my cat has been hit by a car?
You should check the local vet clinics, especially the emergency clinics that are open 24 hours. You should also check with Deceased Animal Pick up through 311.
