Are Pit Bulls allowed in the City of Winnipeg?
No – The City of Winnipeg Pound By-law 2443/79 Section 20.2 (3) bans Pit Bull dogs from the City of Winnipeg.

What is a Pit Bull?
The City of Winnipeg Pound By-law 2443/79 Section 16 defines a “Pit Bull dog” as:

  1. Pit Bull Terrier; or

  2. Staffordshire Bull Terrier; or

  3. American Staffordshire Terrier; or

  4. American Pit Bull Terrier; or

  5. Any dog which has the appearance and physical characteristics predominantly conforming to the standards for any of the above breeds, as established by the Canadian Kennel Club or the American Kennel Club or the United Kennel Club.

Why aren’t rottweilers banned in the City of Winnipeg?

I’m coming to the City of Winnipeg for a dog show with my Staffordshire Bull Terrier. Is this allowed?
A dog can be brought into the city for the purpose of showing it in a dog show sponsored by a bona fide dog club association (Section 20.2 (4) of the City of Winnipeg Pound By-law 2443/79). When the dog is not being shown at the place of the exhibition or show, it must be securely kenneled or muzzled and on a leash not exceeding six feet in length and under the control of a responsible person.

What is a dangerous dog?
As stated in the City of Winnipeg Pound By-law 2443/79 Section 20.1, guard dogs or dogs that have been deemed dangerous by the City of Winnipeg, must be licensed as a Dangerous Dog.

What is the difference between a regular license and a Dangerous Dog License?
If your dog has been declared dangerous by the City of Winnipeg a special license is issued for the dog. There are additional regulations that must be met when owning a dog that has been deemed dangerous. For details see City of Winnipeg Pound By-law 2443/79 Section 20.1 (9).

Can I buy a Dangerous Dog sign from the City of Winnipeg?
No – There are specific signs that have been designed for dogs that are deemed dangerous by the City of Winnipeg. These signs are not available to the general public.
