Casket was the term used in 1875 to describe the tin box placed in the cornerstone of
the first City hall. Today, such a box would be called a time capsule. The casket placed in the cornerstone of the first City Hall
was removed at demolition and placed in the cornerstone of the second City Hall, with the addition of a few new items. The cornerstone
of the second City Hall was laid July 19, 1884. Construction was completed in 1886. Affectionately known as the “Gingerbread” building,
this structure served as City Hall until it was demolished in 1962. Upon its demolition, the casket was moved to a safety deposit box
and then to the Archives.
