PRESS RELEASES

Press Releases from Marc Lemoine, Senior Election Official.

OCTOBER 26, 2006     Election Day Results

ELECTION DAY RESULTS

The 2006 City of Winnipeg General Election, held on October 25, 2006, was a success with 171,395 voters casting ballots for Mayor, Councillor and School Trustee at 182 voting places throughout the City. Voter turnout was 38.2%.

The new Municipal Councils and School Boards Elections Act, brought into force by the Province of Manitoba on January 1, 2006, permitted the City of Winnipeg to make several important changes to its traditional election processes.

The new requirement whereby all voters provided identification in order to vote was well received and was supported by candidates and voters alike. Very few issues arose in this area. This change allowed all citizens to be confident about the integrity of the electoral process.

Other legislative changes allowed for the expansion of advance voting opportunities, which resulted in a record turnout of 15,447 persons voting in advance of Election Day.

The City of Winnipeg was also the first municipality in Canada to utilize the ES&S Automark, new technology which allowed the visually impaired to vote unassisted. This technology was well accepted and proved very successful.

Final Results of the 2006 Election, including a history on previous elections, is available at www.winnipeg.ca .

For more information, please contact the City of Winnipeg Election Office at 204-986-8500.
