ARCHIVES AND RECORDS CONTROL

Making the Best Use of Archives

To ensure that your visit to the Archives is productive and successful, we suggest the following...

Know Your Topic   Consult publications available at public or research libraries and on the Internet to determine what work has already been done on your topic (encyclopedias, books and periodicals).

Formulate Your Question   Identify the scope of your enquiry as precisely as possible.

Discuss Your Topic with Archives' Staff   When you call the Archives for an appointment, discuss your research topic with staff so that we can advise what records are available and how much work it will take to go through the material

Allow Enough Time   Archival research is richly rewarding and can yield detailed evidence of past practice and experience. Researchers need patience and time to extract and understand the information contained in archival records. Be sure to give yourself enough time to use the Archives successfully.

Please let us know about your experience at the Archives. We are interested to hear from our researchers so that we can improve to better meet your needs.
