Council Records

Minutes of meetings of Winnipeg City Council from 1874. The Archives also holds minutes for meetings of municipal councils that amalgamated with the City of Winnipeg in 1972.

Correspondence addressed to Winnipeg City Council from 1874. As well, the Archives holds correspondence addressed to municipal councils that amalgamated with the City of Winnipeg in 1972. Methods of recording and filing incoming correspondence are different for each municipality.

By-Laws passed by Winnipeg City Council since 1874. The Archives also holds by-laws passed by municipal councils that amalgamated with the City of Winnipeg in 1972.

Administrative Records

 

Various approaches to civic administration have been employed by the City of Winnipeg...

Board of Control, 1907-1918. The Board of Control dealt with all financial matters, and generally managed the affairs of the City until it was abolished by referendum in 1918.

Metropolitan Corporation of Greater Winnipeg, 1961-1971. Metro was responsible for water supply, sewage disposal, property assessment, transit, regional streets and regional parks for the greater Winnipeg area from 1961 until the formation of Unicity in 1972.

Municipal Manuals: The Municipal Manual of the City of Winnipeg was first published in 1904 to provide citizens with political and administrative information about their City. They are now a valuable source of historical information on civic government. The Archives has municipal manuals for the City of Winnipeg, 1904-1971 and for the Unified City of Winnipeg for 1972 to date. The current Municipal Manual is available on-line.
