WINNIPEG - April 28, 2010 - Along with cities across North America and around the world, the City of Winnipeg today observed the annual Workers’ Day of Mourning with a ceremony at City Hall. This annual commemoration paid tribute to the 63 civic workers who have died of work-related causes since 1978, and those injured in the workplace.
Mayor Sam Katz, speaking to the families and friends in attendance, said, “This is a day which is very personal for all of us – especially for you, but also for everyone who works at the City. We join you in feeling a sense of tremendous loss for people who were colleagues and friends, and also in resolving to build safer workplaces and prevent accidents on the job.”
“As a City, we’ve just adopted a new Organizational Safety Code of Practice,” said Chief Administrative Officer Glen Laubenstein. ”We’re going to keep up the effort to make sure people have the training, tools, and information they need to make City workplaces safer.”
In addition to the ceremony at City Hall, worksite ceremonies were also being held at City facilities at 1155/1199 Pacific Avenue, 1220 Pacific Avenue, 598 Plinquet Street, and at the Millennium Library.
The Workers’ Day of Mourning takes place across Canada on April 28, each year. It was proclaimed by Canada’s Parliament in 1991, and is now recognized in more than 80 countries. |
