Winnipeg, December 18, 2009 – A much anticipated holiday gift was officially opened in St. Vital today. After two years of extensive renovations, the Norberry-Glenlee Community Centre located at 26 Molgat Avenue is now fully-operational. The Honourable Nancy Allan, Minister of Education and MLA for St. Vital joined Gord Steeves, Winnipeg Acting Deputy Mayor and St. Vital City Councillor and Grant Prairie, President of the Norberry-Glenlee Community Centre in a ribbon-cutting ceremony.
The $2.5 million project was funded by the Building Communities Initiative, Community Places, the Manitoba-Winnipeg Recreation and Leisure Infrastructure Program’s Community Centre Investment Fund, the Community Incentive Grant Program, the Land Dedication Reserve and the Norberry-Glenlee Community Centre.
The newly expanded facility features a full-size gym, multi-purpose room, new front entrance and several upgrades and enhancements throughout.
“The opening of this new, amalgamated complex is a tribute to the coordinated efforts of local citizens who are role models for us all,” said Allan. “The Province of Manitoba is committed to enhancing programs and services that encourage active, healthy living for all ages and that create safe places for our children and this expanded facility meets those needs.”
“It’s vital for the well-being of our citizens that they have access to high-quality facilities, making it possible for them to participate in year-round recreational and social activities,” said Steeves. “The new life that has been given to this centre is a huge achievement for our community.”
"Parents, children and seniors in our area are very excited with the investment that has been made in our community,” said Prairie. “The new facility will provide local residents with expanded and enhanced recreational opportunities and will ensure that the centre remains an important gathering place for our community for years to come.”
In 2006, it was determined that the area would be better served by one expanded facility, so the Norberry and Glenlee Boards of Directors became one, Norberry was selected as the new site, and shovels hit the ground in October 2008. The grounds and fieldhouse at the Glenlee site will continue to be operated and maintained by Norberry-Glenlee. |
