Mayor Announces Revitalization of Environmental Advisory Committee
Advisory Committee will continue to provide environmental directives as mandated

Committed to ensuring valuable public perspective on environmental sustainability in Winnipeg, Mayor Sam Katz today announced the Mayor’s Environmental Advisory Committee will continue with three of its members under the new leadership of Co-Chairs Councillor Russ Wyatt and Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce Chairman, Jeffrey Hartry. The Mayor’s Environmental Advisory Committee is also immediately commencing a public call for submissions to fill the remaining positions for the committee. WINNIPEG - February 12, 2009 - Committed to ensuring valuable public perspective on environmental sustainability in Winnipeg, Mayor Sam Katz today announced the Mayor’s Environmental Advisory Committee will continue with three of its members under the new leadership of Co-Chairs Councillor Russ Wyatt and Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce Chairman, Jeffrey Hartry. The Mayor’s Environmental Advisory Committee is also immediately commencing a public call for submissions to fill the remaining positions for the committee.

"I’ve always said that a successful committee is run under strong leadership and I am confident that by designating Councillor Wyatt and Jeffrey Hartry  as co-chairs of the Environmental Advisory Committee, we are going to see long-term action-oriented recommendations on issues that impact our entire City,” said Mayor Sam Katz. “I appreciate all of the hard work and passion the continuing members have demonstrated to act on our City’s environmental policies." 

The four members of the Mayor’s Environmental Advisory Committee currently include:

  • Co-Chair, Transcona Ward Councillor Russ Wyatt
  • Co-Chair , Jeffrey Hartry –Board Chairman, Winnipeg Chamber of Commerce
  • Anders Swanson – One Green City, Active Transportation Advisory Committee
  • Arne Elias – Executive Director, The Centre for Sustainable Transportation at the University of Winnipeg

The Mayor’s Environmental Advisory Committee call for committee member applications will commence immediately and close at noon on Thursday, February 26th, 2009. Individuals interested in submitting an application are asked to provide a cover letter, including relevant experience to MYO-Mayor@winnipeg.ca or:

With the new members in place, the Mayor’s Environmental Advisory Committee will hold its next meeting in March, and will deliver recommendations on a quarterly basis beginning this spring. A 2009 meeting schedule will be determined at the March meeting including dates for public meetings as directed in the committee mandate.

Recycling/Garbage Collection on Monday, February 16, 2009:

Single-family Homes

  • There will be no recycling or garbage collection on Monday, February 16, 2009. Collection will resume on Tuesday, February 17, 2009 – Day 2 on the five-day cycle.

Multi-family Apartments

  • Recycling and garbage collection will continue as normally scheduled.

Hours of operation for the Brady Road Landfill during the holiday weekend:

Saturday, February 14, 2009

9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Sunday, February 15, 2009 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Monday, February 16, 2009 5:30 a.m. to 6:00 p.m.

Winnipeg Transit:

Monday, February 16, 2009, Winnipeg Transit will be operating on a Sunday schedule.

Libraries:

All branches will be closed on Monday, February 16, 2009.


Assiniboine Park:

Zoo:

  • Open 10:00 a.m. - 4:00 p. m. on Monday, February 16, 2009.

Conservatory:

  • Open 9:00 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. on Monday, February 16, 2009.

Swimming Pools:

All pools will be closed on Monday, February 16, 2009, except Pan Am Pool.

Pan Am will be open 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.


Leisure Centres:

All Leisure Centres are closed on Monday, February 16, 2009.

Animal Services Agency:

The Animal Services Agency will be closed Monday, February 16, 2009.
