City of Winnipeg operating hours for the October Long Weekend

City of Winnipeg Offices:
All civic offices are closed on Monday, October 13, 2008
Water and Waste:

Recycling and garbage will not be collected on the Monday, October 13, 2008. Collection will resume on Tuesday, October 14, 2008 – Day 2 on the five-day cycle.

This affects only those homes on the 5 day collection calendar for garbage and recycling. Collection for all others (i.e., apartments) will continue as normally scheduled.

The Recycling/Garbage Collection Calendar is at the back of the MTS White Pages Phone Book and at Winnipeg.ca/waterandwaste.

Hours of operation for the Brady Road Landfill during the holiday weekend:
Saturday, October 11 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Sunday, October 12 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m.
Monday, October 13 5:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m.

Winnipeg Transit:

Libraries:

All libraries are closed on Monday, October 13, 2008. Regular hours are in effect on Saturday, October 11 and Sunday, October 12, 2008.

Assiniboine Park

Zoo:
Open 10:00 a.m. – 6:00 p.m.

Conservatory:
Open 9:00 a.m. – 4:30 p.m.
Swimming Pools:
All indoor pools are closed on Monday, October 13, 2008, except Pan Am Pool. The Pan Am Pool is open 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Regular hours are in effect for all indoor pools on Saturday, October 11 and Sunday, October 12, 2008.
Leisure Centres:

All Leisure Centres are closed on Monday, October 13, 2008. Regular hours are in effect on Saturday October 11 and Sunday, October 12. Please see the Leisure Guide or visit the City of Winnipeg Web site Winnipeg.ca for Leisure Centre schedules.

Animal Services Agency:
The Animal Services Agency will be closed Monday, October 13, 2008. Normal weekend operating hours are in effect on Saturday, October 11 and Sunday, October 12, 2008, from 12:00 p.m. – 5:00 p.m.
Golf Courses:

All municipal courses are open from dawn to dusk over the long weekend. Call now to book your tee times.

Remembering the First World War

On October 18, 2008, Brookside Cemetery will be remembering the 90th Anniversary of the signing of the armistice to end the First World War by rededicating the first section of the Field of Honour where War Dead and Veterans who served in that war are interred. WINNIPEG - October 9, 2008 – On October 18, 2008, Brookside Cemetery will be remembering the 90th Anniversary of the signing of the armistice to end the First World War by rededicating the first section of the Field of Honour where War Dead and Veterans who served in that war are interred.

The Field of Honour section to be rededicated is known simply as the Teardrop Section (named for its shape). The Teardrop section has recently been renovated by the Commonwealth War Graves Commission to include military monuments marking each interment, and perennial and annual landscaping to enhance the section. At 2:00 pm a rededication ceremony will take place at the Teardrop Section at Brookside which will include a colour parade and short service. The public is welcome to attend.

Full details of the Rededication day activities at Brookside:

  • Free park and ride from RRC Notre Dame Campus bus stand, including tour of the Field of Honour. First tour bus at 10:00 am then every half hour. Last tour prior to service leaves at 1:00 pm. Final tour of the day leaves at 3:00 pm.
  • Place your own Canadian flag along with the 12,000 others decorating the Field of Honour.
  • See displays of military costumes, memorabilia and vehicles.
  • Ride the WFPS aerial lift to get that aerial photo, $1.00 donation per person, (Donated to Veterans support funds).
  • Make a monument rubbing.
  • ‘Share the story’ with the Veterans.
  • See and learn the history behind each military monument.
  • Bring a donation for Winnipeg Harvest, drop off points on the bus and in the administration building.
  • Administration Offices open from 10:00 am until 1:45 pm.
  • Seasonal wreaths for sale. Purchase now and we will place it for you.
  • Refreshments available.

The Teardrop Section in the Brookside Field of Honour dedicated to the interment of War Dead and Veterans was first started in 1914 by the women of the Manitoba Chapter of I.O.D.E. Brookside’s Field of Honour has now become the largest and most significant military interment site in all of Canada.

Fire Prevention Week
Fire Paramedic Stations invite the public to attend Saturday, October 11, 2008

As part of Fire Prevention Week, on Saturday, October 11, 2008 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., members of the public are welcome to drop in and meet the firefighters and check out the firefighting equipment at all Fire Paramedic Stations throughout the city. WINNIPEG - October 9, 2008 – As part of Fire Prevention Week, on Saturday, October 11, 2008 from 12:00 p.m. to 4:00 p.m., members of the public are welcome to drop in and meet the firefighters and check out the firefighting equipment at all Fire Paramedic Stations throughout the city.

Refreshments will be available courtesy of McDonalds Restaurants, the major sponsor of Fire Prevention week. 

In keeping with this year’s theme “Prevent Home Fires,” the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service recommends that all families develop a home escape plan in case of a fire or emergency in their home.
