WINNIPEG - October 1, 2008 – The City of Winnipeg Assessment and Taxation Department is required by law to reassess the value of all property in the City of Winnipeg.  Over the next few months, property owners in Winnipeg will be receiving preliminary information concerning the proposed value of their property for the 2010 General Assessment.  This information will be sent out to different regions of the city at different times in order to accommodate the volume of customers and the properties in each region.

“We want Winnipeg property owners to have the opportunity of reviewing their proposed property value and this information will be available in a number of ways,” said Nelson Karpa, Director of Assessment and Taxation.  “A preview letter will be sent to each property owner, and they will be able to access additional information through our website. We will also be holding a series of open houses throughout the city and details regarding dates and locations of these will be included with each property owner’s personalized preview letter.”

In addition to changes in the real estate market, there are many factors that can impact the assessed value of a property including new construction, renovations, and changes in the general market value of similar neighbourhood properties.

“The processes and systems used by the Assessment and Taxation Department have recently achieved ISO certification. The Department is committed to providing quality customer service throughout the 2010 General Assessment,” said Karpa.

The Assessment and Taxation Department is responsible for conducting a general assessment of all property in the City of Winnipeg. This includes the valuation and classification of all Winnipeg homes and properties – both residential and commercial – in order to ensure fair distribution of taxes.
