City reaction to ATU members ratifying contract

Today, members of the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU), Local 1505, representing Winnipeg Transit Drivers and Maintenance Workers, have voted to ratify the most recent tentative agreement between the City of Winnipeg and the ATU’s negotiating committee. With the approval of this agreement, all Transit services will continue on their normal schedules tomorrow.  (for more details, please read the full media release below)

WINNIPEG - August 20, 2008 – Today, members of the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU), Local 1505, representing Winnipeg Transit Drivers and Maintenance Workers, have voted to ratify the most recent tentative agreement between the City of Winnipeg and the ATU’s negotiating committee.

With the approval of this agreement, all Transit services will continue on their normal schedules tomorrow.

Director of Transit Dave Wardrop said, “We are pleased that ATU members have voted to accept this tentative agreement. While the negotiation was a difficult one, I am confident that this agreement will serve us well, moving forward.”

Wardrop added, “We know that there are opportunities for improvement at Winnipeg Transit, and we look forward to continuing our discussion on non-contractual issues regarding working conditions. Working together, I am sure that improvements will be made.”

This agreement provides wage and benefit improvements, including a general salary increase of 2% in 2008, 2.2% in 2009, and 3% in 2010. ATU concerns with respect to Sunday shifting are being referred to arbitration.
