WINNIPEG - August 18, 2008 – On August 6, 2008, a special meeting of Winnipeg City Council ratified a settlement with the Amalgamated Transit Union (ATU) Local 1505.

This coming Wednesday, August 20, 2008, ATU members will be voting on this settlement. If the settlement is rejected by ATU members, a strike could result, leading to a complete suspension of Transit services for an indefinite period beginning on Thursday, August 21, 2008.

Winnipeg Transit regrets the uncertainty this situation causes Transit riders. In preparation for a possible strike by bus operators and maintenance staff, we urge our customers to consider making alternate travel arrangements. The City and the ATU Executive continue to work together to do everything possible to avoid a strike.

Winnipeg Transit is committed to keeping our customers fully informed as information becomes available. The outcome of the ATU vote will be posted on www.winnipegtransit.com and on Telebus at 287-7433 on the evening of August 20, 2008.

Winnipeg Transit expects that Handi-Transit service will continue as usual.
