WINNIPEG - July 3, 2008 The City of Winnipeg’s Adult Nuisance Mosquito fogging program will not occur tonight, Thursday, July 3, 2008 due to low mosquito activity. The city wide average trap count for today, July 3, 2008 is 19.  All quadrants are substantially below 100.

The City of Winnipeg began an Adult Nuisance Mosquito Fogging Program for the entire City, with buffer zones respected, on Friday, June 27, 2008. To date, all 51 Insect Management Areas within the City have been treated once, with some areas of the City receiving a second treatment.

The City-wide Adulticiding Factor Analysis (AFA) remains at High. The Insect Control Branch will continue to monitor the data, including trap counts, on a daily basis and will provide an update if conditions change.

Fogging will resume when trap counts are in the range of 100 in one or more quadrants of the city. An 8 hour Public Service Announcement will be issued prior to resuming the Adult Nuisance Mosquito Fogging Program. If and when the fogging program is to resume, it will be carried out in the entire city (buffer zones respected), continuing to prioritize first for areas with highest nuisance mosquito populations.

The City’s extensive larviciding and residual treatment programs will continue throughout the City. Residual treatments, using environmentally friendly products made from the chrysanthemum flower, are being applied to localized areas of long grass and bushes and shrubs where adult mosquitoes rest during the day. An aggressive larviciding program is also continuing due to significant rains received in the city late last week, with some parts of the City receiving 75 mm.

The City is once again strongly encouraging property owners to eliminate standing water on their properties as private properties account for one-half of larval development.

Residents are reminded that, if they wish to have their primary residence excluded from the adult nuisance mosquito fogging program, they can register in writing by contacting the Insect Control Branch at 3 Grey Street, Winnipeg, MB, R2L 1V2, by email or by fax at 311.  Visit our website at Winnipeg.ca/bugline for more information on how to register for buffer zones. Up to 72 hours may be required for processing.
