WINNIPEG – June 6, 2008 – Committed to promoting ownership of our community and keeping Winnipeg clean and green, Mayor Sam Katz, joined by Tom Ethans, Executive Director of Take Pride Winnipeg! and Frank McEwen, District Manager of BFI Canada, today announced the continuation of GreenWave with a call for summer student position submissions.

The GreenWave program began in 2006 and focuses on community clean-up and neighbourhood improvement projects. GreenWave employees will work primarily in Business Improvement Zones, focusing on graffiti removal, litter cleanup, sidewalk sweeping, and mural painting. GreenWave employees will also carry out large-scale community clean up projects in conjunction with City of Winnipeg Parks and Open Space staff.

“GreenWave has been viewed as a great success city-wide. I am pleased we can continue to beautify Winnipeg and engage youth in civic responsibility for the third year in a row,” said Mayor Sam Katz. “By providing opportunity and positive alternatives to our young people, we continue to build pride in our entire community.”

“GreenWave program is a fantastic way for youth to show that they care about their city and effect a positive change in the beautification of Winnipeg,” said Tom Ethans, Executive Director of Take Pride Winnipeg. “It is wonderful that BFI Canada has partnered with the City of Winnipeg and Take Pride Winnipeg! this year to offer this wonderful opportunity to our city’s youth.”

“BFI Canada is very excited about our partnership with Take Pride Winnipeg! having been a major sponsor of the organization since its inception,” said Frank McEwen, District Manager, BFI Canada. “We are very happy to provide funding for the GreenWave program and give young people the chance to help make Winnipeg a better city.”

Winnipeg students between 16 -19 years old who are returning to school in the Fall and have an interest working in team settings on civic beautification projects are encouraged to apply for the 8-week GreenWave program.
