WINNIPEG – June 2, 2008 – Winnipeg families will again be able to visit the Assiniboine Park Zoo for free on Canada Day this year, as Mayor Sam Katz announced the city will again cover the admission costs as part of the “Mayor’s Family Day at the Zoo”.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for Winnipeggers and visitors alike to enjoy a day with their families at Assiniboine Park,” said Mayor Katz. “Winnipeggers have told me how this annual tradition has become a staple part of their Canada Day celebrations.”
Mayor Katz first supported free admission to the Zoo in 2004 to mark its 100th anniversary and the Mayor has supported a family day at the Zoo ever since.
“We have a real jewel here in Assiniboine Park, and I want all of the families who will be coming out on Canada Day to have a chance to see the Zoo for free,” said Katz.
Assiniboine Park Zoo Curator, Dr. Bob Wrigley noted that “Canada Day is the peak of the baby season at the Zoo, so there is no better time to spend a day with the animals. Celebrate our country’s birthday by enjoying the antics of some of our 2500 native and exotic species from over 50 countries around the world.”
An average of 18,500 visitors attend the Mayor's Family Day each year.
