(for more details, please read the full media release below)

WINNIPEG - May 15, 2008 – The public is advised that effective immediately, the fee associated with the City of Winnipeg having to take remedial action relative to un-mown grass or weeds on private property has increased from $60.00 to $135.00 for the typical residential property. Maintenance responsibilities relating to grass and weeds apply to all residential, industrial, commercial and agricultural lands within the City of Winnipeg. The fee changes also apply to situations where property owners fail to maintain boulevards.

The new fee reflects the true costs associated with enforcement including; processing of complaints, conducting inspections, direct remedial action, invoicing and collection of fees.

Property owners in violation of the Unsightly Premises or Boulevard Maintenance By-law will be served an Order advising them of the violation and providing a reasonable period of time for corrective action. In the event that owners do not comply with the Order the City will take remedial action and invoice the owner accordingly.

The intent is to establish an objective standard of care relative to green space management serving to benefit the community at large.
