WINNIPEG - May 13, 2008 – Committed to providing positive alternatives for inner-city youth, Mayor Sam Katz today announced community-led LiveSAFE partnerships in the Mayfair Area. The City’s Community Services Department has worked with a number of community partners to develop a variety of recreation programs for children in the inner-city.
“These community driven initiatives play a vital role in forming long lasting partnerships that will provide our children with positive alternatives,” said Mayor Sam Katz. “To recognize crime prevention week, it is important to recognize the community as a key factor in ensuring lasting success and the City is thrilled to play a collaborative role to provide children in high needs areas with a variety of new free play recreation programs. It goes to show that with some community spirit and cooperation, you can make a difference.”
“The Board of the Fort Rouge Resource Centre comprised of Mayfair area residents, have diligently volunteered their time and commitment to making things happen in their area. Working with the Community Services Department and in partnership with other community organizations, the group has developed enhanced recreation activities that will provide children an opportunity to learn and grow in a fun environment” said Clive Wightman, the City’s Director of Community Services.
New recreation programming partnerships include:
Youth Action Centre:
The City of Winnipeg Community Services Department. in partnership with River Osborne Community Centre initiated a Youth Action Centre at River Osborne Community Centre, 101 Pembina Highway, effective March 1, 2008.
Age Group: 12 to 18 yrs
Time: Friday & Saturday 6:00 pm to 10:00 pm
Onsite activities include basketball, volleyball, crafts, floor hockey, board games, badminton, video games and special events.
River Osborne Community Centre Satellite Children’s Programming out of 40 Mayfair Place (The Fort Rouge Resource Centre)
Children’s drop in free play program began April 15, 2008
Ages: 6 to 12 yrs (flexible)
Tuesday and Thursday 3:30 pm to 6:00 pm
Saturday 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm
Onsite activities include arts and crafts, organized games, free play, and access to computers.
The satellite programming at 40 Mayfair Place will continue to operate until the City of Winnipeg expands the children’s programming at Fort Rouge School for the summer months. Summer programs will run from July 2 to August 17 10:30 am to 4:30 pm daily. This will ensure 7 day a week availability for children’s programming in the area.over the summer months.
Aboriginal Girl Guides:
The Fort Rouge Resource Centre is to commence an Aboriginal Girl Guides program in September at the Centre (40 Mayfair Place). Additional funding to assist with this has been provided by the River Heights/Fort Rouge Families Forward Parent Child Coaltion.
The Fort Rouge Resource Centre partnership with the City:
A partnership between the Fort Rouge Resource Centre Inc. (an incorporated Board of volunteers comprised of area residents) and the City of Winnipeg Community Services Department has worked at increasing recreation and leisure opportunities for area residents. The utilization of City space (40 Mayfair Place), enables the operation of the only Resource Centre in the immediate area.
The Centre offers a drop-in facility equipped with a washer and dryer, computers with Internet access, telephone, television and a Winnipeg Harvest Food Bank site. More recently, it is home to the River Osborne Satellite Children’s programming and the upcoming Aboriginal Girl Guides program.
