WINNIPEG - May 12, 2008 – Regarding the 7.6 magnitude earthquake in our sister city of Chengdu, Sichuan, China, Mayor Sam Katz offered the following statement:
“On behalf of all Winnipeggers, our thoughts and prayers go out to the citizens of Chengdu, Sichuan, and neighbouring municipalities and provinces as they cope with a tragedy of such magnitude. No city expects such a grave tragedy to take place, and it is my hope that during these trying times the affected communities in China will find strength in each other to face tragedy and rebuild together.”
“Winnipeg is also a city that knows how to pull together and step up to assist those who have been struck by tragedy. I would encourage any Winnipegger who wishes to assist those affected by the earthquake in and around our sister city of Chengdu, China, to remain vigilant as relief agencies begin coordinating efforts in the coming hours and days to accept donations to assist with rescue efforts in the affected area.
