WINNIPEG - May 5, 2008 – Winnipeg Public Library is offering young people ages 13-17 a fun opportunity to volunteer for its annual Read Aloud Program this summer. Teen volunteers are needed at 20 library branches throughout Winnipeg to work as reading buddies with children ages 6-10. Volunteers who speak and read French fluently are also needed for St. Boniface Library.

Volunteers should be able to commit to two hours once a week for a four-week session in July and/or August. Training and supervision are provided.

Reading is a basic life skill and the cornerstone for a child’s success in school. By sharing stories, word games and literacy activities, Read Aloud Program volunteers help young readers to build confidence and develop motivation to improve their skills.

For more information about the Read Aloud Program or to request an application, please call City of Winnipeg Volunteer Services at 311. For a downloadable application form, please visit winnipeg.ca/cms/volunteers. The deadline for applications (including returning volunteers) is Tuesday, May 20, 2008.
