WINNIPEG - April 29, 2008 – The City of Winnipeg’s Public Works Department will undertake an extensive list of construction projects in 2008 as the City continues to address the renewal of its roads, bridges and alleys, while strategically expanding capacity on some of the city's highest priority routes.

“With the adoption of the 2008 Capital Budget, City Council has once again made a significant investment in Winnipeg’s street and bridge infrastructure,” said Bill Larkin, Director of Public Works. “We are taking steps to accelerate our projects by introducing innovative construction techniques and early completion incentives. We ask for the public’s patience during construction, and that drivers respect the safety of our workers by slowing down where construction and maintenance is taking place on our roads.”

In addition to the rehabilitation of the westbound structure of the Fort Garry Twin Bridges, which is already underway and expected to be completed by September of this year, the City will undertake 17 Regional Streets projects totaling approximately $22.2 million.

Twenty-four Local Streets projects are also slated for the 2008 construction season with a budget of approximately $11 million to be spent on a combination of major rehabilitation and reconstruction work. In addition, approximately $3 million will be spent to preserve existing local streets under the City’s Residential Thin Bituminous Overlays program.

This year, City Council has approved more than $3.1 million for alley reconstruction, an increase of more than $2 million over last year. With this year’s increased funding, Public Works plans to reconstruct 13 alleys.

A new capital program will allow Public Works to spend approximately $2.7 million on granular roadway improvements for some of the city's highest use gravel surfaced roads, compared to $500,000 last year.

In addition, $1.1 million will be spent on the renewal and new construction of sidewalks.

Moving forward on a commitment to reduce disruptions to traffic and to shorten the duration of major projects, Public Works will incorporate accelerated construction practices into two of its major projects:

  1. Rehabilitation of the Fort Garry Twin Bridges; and
  2. Rehabilitation of St. Mary’s Road between St. Anne’s Road and Fermor Avenue.
