WINNIPEG - June 8, 2007- Today, the City of Winnipeg and the Pembina Trails School Division celebrated Arbor Day with a formal ceremony and planting of a Blackhill Spruce tree at Ecole Crane School, 888 Crane Avenue.

Arbor Day began in Nebraska, USA in 1872 and is celebrated across Canada and many countries around the world. The ceremonial tree planting has come to symbolize the importance of conservation and the significance of trees and forests to our Canadian way of life.

Guests at the ceremony included:

Councillor Harvey Smith - Daniel McIntyre Ward
Laureen Goodridge, Chair - Pembina Trails School Board
Dianne Zuk, Trustee - Pembina Trails School Board
Dave Domke, City Forester – City of Winnipeg
Michele Manaigre, Principal - Ecole Crane School

Councillor Smith presented awards to students who submitted the best-written works on the importance of trees and conservation
