WINNIPEG - May 14, 2007 - Staff will be visiting about 20,000 homes over the summer to see if sump pump hoses are draining properly. Notices will be mailed out this week advising owners of the upcoming inspection.

The Winnipeg Building By-law requires all homes built since 1990 to have a sump pump and pit. The Lot Grading By-law includes requirements for proper drainage of sump pump water.

Inspectors will be looking at the sump pump hose on each property and will not enter homes. Staff will wear a uniform and City of Winnipeg identification.

Sump pump water should be drained onto your own property. It is against the By-laws to drain sump pump water onto neighbouring properties, lanes, sidewalks, boulevards, streets, or into your home’s floor drain.

Directing sump pump water to the floor drain can overwhelm the sewer system and increase the cost of treatment. For more information on the inspection program, visit Winnipeg.ca/waterandwaste
