| City continues to monitor river levels Property owners are reminded to take preventative measures
WINNIPEG March 30, 2007 - Based on average weather conditions, the Red River is currently forecast to peak at 17.0 feet James Avenue datum early next week. The City wishes to remind citizens to take care and caution around all rivers, retention ponds, ditches, creeks, and waterways. Citizens are advised to keep well away from all ice-covered or open bodies of water. The City of Winnipeg continues to monitor river levels. Fewer than a half-dozen properties within Winnipeg are at risk of river flooding based on this forecast. Owners of these properties have been notified that sandbag dikes are recommended. Property owners are advised to take the following measures to prevent basement flooding in the event of a major rainstorm:
Residents who need to protect their property against snowmelt runoff can pick up sandbags Monday to Friday between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m. at the following four locations:
On Saturday, March 31 and Sunday, April 1, 2007 between 10:00 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., sandbags may be picked up at 1220 Pacific Avenue. Anyone picking up sandbags will be required to show identification to demonstrate that they are residents of Winnipeg. Areas that experience some level of overland flooding are typically adjacent to large fields, agricultural lands, and areas with drainage ditches. The City prepares sandbags each spring for those residents that need to protect their property from snowmelt runoff. If property owners have concerns or questions they are advised to contact the Public Works Customer Service Call Centre at 311 weekdays between 8:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. After hours inquiries can be directed to 311. To protect against rising river levels, residents who live along the river should move or secure any structures or equipment near the water's edge, such as docks, sheds, gazebos, irrigation pumps and recreational equipment.
