Community Development Day activities help improve the environment
MEDIA RELEASE: WINNIPEG September 12, 2006 - Today, The City of Winnipeg’s Public Works Department Naturalist Services Branch and 17 Wing of the Canadian Forces participated in a Community Development Day. Activities aimed at helping to improve the environment took place from 7:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at the Assiniboine Forest and Summit Road Landfill. Logs were hauled away from the newly constructed wetland in Assiniboine Forest along Shaftesbury Road and made into woodchips for trail enhancement. Native poplar tree species were planted at the Summit Road Landfill as part of a larger remediation project to reduce leachate production and restore natural habitat. “Today's efforts were very positive,” said Cheryl Heming, City Naturalist. “The Naturalist Services Branch is delighted to work with volunteer groups that want to make a contribution to the environment.” For Air Force personnel, all roads will lead to 17 Wing Winnipeg. The Wing is comprised of three squadrons and six schools. It also provides support to 113 units stretching from Thunder Bay, Ontario, to the Saskatchewan/Alberta border and from the 49th Parallel to the high Arctic. All combined, 17 Wing turns out what are considered some of the best pilots, air navigators and multi-skilled personnel in the world. |
