MEDIA RELEASE:

WINNIPEG August 18, 2006 - The Province of Manitoba, the City of Winnipeg, the University of Manitoba and the Coalition to Save the Elms are participating in an innovative new Dutch Elm Disease (DED) research project.

The project will kick off at Camp Amisk near La Barriere Park on Monday, June 21, 2006 at noon. Dr. Neil Holliday, Professor of Entomology, along with his PhD. research candidate Sunday Oghiakhe, will systematically remove a tree and label it for this research.

This research will explore three different aspects of DED management:

  • Determining if the practice of “rapid removal” will reduce the incidence of Dutch elm disease in the City of Winnipeg
  • Reviewing alternative insecticides for basal spraying to determine their effectiveness
  • Learning more about the life cycle of the elm bark beetle in order to better control Dutch elm disease

Media are invited to come out discuss this research with Dr. Holliday and Sunday Oghiakhe from the University of Manitoba and David Domke from the City of Winnipeg on Monday August 21, 2006 at 12 noon at Camp Amisk near La Barriere Park.

Please note – Camp Amisk is directly adjacent to the entrance to La Barriere Park.
