Cankerworm control program continues
WINNIPEG May 31, 2006 - On Wednesday, May 31, 2006, the City of Winnipeg's Insect Control Branch will continue its cankerworm control program for areas within the City. Starting at 9:30 pm tonight, Wednesday, May 31st to June 1st inclusive, crews will be treating the Norwood Flats and the St. Vital area. Living Prairie Museum - Controlled Burn - May 31 to June 1, 2006
WINNIPEG May 30, 2006 - The City of Winnipeg, Public Works Department supported by the Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service will be conducting a controlled burn during the day at the Living Prairie Museum, 2795 Ness Avenue, between Wednesday, May 31 and Thursday, June 1, 2006 weather conditions permitting.

WINNIPEG May 29, 2006 - On Monday, May 29, 2006, the City of Winnipeg's Insect Control Branch will continue its cankerworm control program for areas within the City. Starting at 9:30 p.m. tonight, Monday, May 29th until Tuesday , May 30th inclusive, crews will be completing the River Heights area, then proceeding to the Riverview area. Kenaston Underpass Project temporary closure
WINNIPEG May 26, 2006 - The following closures and traffic re-routes will be in effect on Sunday, May 28th between 6:00 a.m. and 8:00 p.m., to allow for railway works associated with the Kenaston Underpass Project (see list and map below). Cankerworm and Nuisance Mosquito Control Programs continue
WINNIPEG May 25, 2006 - The Insect Control Branch has now completed initial treatment of Assiniboine and Kildonan Parks, the Fort Rouge, West End, East Kildonan and St. Boniface areas, and has started in the Transcona area. Monitoring of the treated areas has indicated a reduction in the overall cankerworm population. However, a second treatment was required in the Fort Rouge area and current monitoring indicates further treatment is required in the West End and St. Boniface areas. The control program takes place between the hours of 9:30 p.m. and 5:30 a.m. daily, weather dependent. Compost bins on sale at 'down to earth' prices
WINNIPEG May 25, 2006 - The City of Winnipeg and the Province of Manitoba are sponsoring a one-day compost bin sale this Saturday, May 27, 2006.

Arbor Day celebrations
WINNIPEG May 25, 2006 - Today, the City of Winnipeg and the River East Transcona School Division celebrated Arbor Day with a formal ceremony and planting of a Blackhill Spruce tree at Emerson School, 323 Emerson Avenue.

Council reaffirms support for Olywest process
WINNIPEG May 24, 2006 - Six months ago, Winnipeg City Council agreed to allow Olywest to build a food processing plant in industrial land in St. Boniface, conditional on the firm obtaining provincial environmental approvals.

Mayor announces free family day at the Zoo
WINNIPEG May 19, 2006 - Winnipeg families will be able to visit the Assiniboine Park Zoo for free on Canada Day again this year, as Mayor Sam Katz will cover the admission costs as part of the "Mayor's Family Day at the Zoo".

City of Winnipeg cankerworm and nuisance mosquito control programs continue
WINNIPEG May 18, 2006 - Favourable weather conditions have allowed the Insect Control Branch to conduct treatment for cankerworm control in the Assiniboine and Kildonan Park, the Fort Rouge, West End, East Kildonan, and St Boniface areas. Monitoring of the treated areas has indicated good control in decreasing the cankerworm population. Within the Fort Rouge area however, higher cankerworm populations continue and as a result, crews will be conducting further treatment over the next few nights. Mayor, Police Chief act on City Summit advice
WINNIPEG May 17, 2006 - Mayor Katz will leave for Ottawa this afternoon for a round of meetings with federal government officials, including Justice Minister Vic Toews. The Mayor plans to discuss federal justice promises and policies and their specific impact on Winnipeg's crime prevention strategy in the coming year. The Mayor also formally asked Winnipeg Police Service Chief Jack Ewatski to report before July 10th on the adoption of several policing innovations proven to be effective elsewhere in North America.

Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service to mark EMS Week with activities for the public
WINNIPEG May 12, 2006 - May 14-20 is Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Awareness Week in Canada. The Winnipeg Fire Paramedic Service (WFPS) will be offering free blood pressure and blood sugar testing and providing educational information on diabetes, bicycle safety, helmet use, home safety, and the Emergency Response Information Kits (ERIK). They will also be providing stickers, coloring books and tattoos for the kids. The dates, times, and locations are as follows: May 16th, St. Vital Shopping Centre (8:00 a.m. — 9:00 p.m.); May 17th, Polo Park Shopping Centre (8:00 a.m. — 9:00 p.m.); May 18th, Garden City Shopping Centre (8 a.m. — 9 p.m.)

Starting at 9:30 p.m. tonight crews will be concentrating their efforts in the Fort Rouge area until Sunday, May 14, 2006 inclusive. Spraying will not occur if there is a significant rainfall or winds are greater than 20 kmph. City commences cankerworm control program
WINNIPEG May 10, 2006 - Today, the Insect Control Branch announced the commencement of its cankerworm control program for trees in City parks and on City boulevards in specific areas of the City where cankerworms are causing significant defoliation.It is anticipated that the program will last for approximately two to three weeks, weather permitting. A daily Public Service Announcement will be issued that will provide information on the areas of the city in which trees will be sprayed that night.

All sandbag dikes may now be removed
WINNIPEG May 05, 2006 - Due to a decrease in water levels, property owners may now safely remove sandbag dikes. Property owners are responsible for the removal and disposal of the sandbags. Removal is recommended in a timely manner due to riverbank stability concerns.

Roadway lane lining program begins
WINNIPEG May 05, 2006 - The City's annual roadway lane line painting program commences Monday, May 8, 2006. Motorists are urged to exercise caution when approaching painting machinery and personnel.

Roadway bike paths to open
WINNIPEG May 05, 2006 - The City's four popular roadway bike paths will open for the season on Sunday May 7, 2006.

Insect Control Branch activities continue
WINNIPEG May 04, 2006 - The City of Winnipeg is expecting to complete the initial larviciding treatment of all identified standing water sites within the entire city and approximately a 10 km radius surrounding the city in the next couple of days, weather permitting. Property owners should also help "Fight the Bite" by eliminating standing water on their properties. Also, in some parts of the city, such as Fort Rouge, River Heights, St. James, St. Vital and West Kildonan, a higher than normal emergence of cankerworms is anticipated. Protective hoarding to be built around Public Safety Building
WINNIPEG - May 03, 2006 - Beginning May 3, a protective hoarding or covered walkway will be built around the entire Public Safety Building (PSB). Public access to the PSB and the Civic Parkade will remain open.

2006 General Civic Election update
WINNIPEG - May 01, 2006 - The 2006 General Civic Election for the City of Winnipeg will be held on Wednesday, October 25, 2006. Every person who proposes to be a candidate for Mayor must register in-person with the Senior Election Official. Registrations will be accepted at the City Clerk's Department, Main Floor, Council Building, 510 Main Street, from Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
